FEBRUARY PROJECT [Grades 7-12] Make a leather belt

Join us for our weekly after-school classes! Students will work on a new project, progressing from design to build, every 4 weeks. Note that the registration price includes supplies and materials.

Class length: 1 hour

Ages: Middle School and High School

February: Make a leather belt. Jump into the basics of leatherworking by cutting, shaping and punching your very own leather belt.

Description: Starting with a section of tanned cattle hide, participants will learn how to cut straight straps. Next, will use a garment tape to measure their size, then use shears to cut and shape the strap into a belt. After placing marks with a pencil and ruler, participants will use a leather punch to make the buckle holes. Finally, they will rivet the buckle to the belt using an anvil and hammer and then finish it with a light waxing for protection and years of use.

Skills: Leatherworking, Measuring, Rivetting.

Tools involved: Spoke shave, Leather hole punch, Leather strap cutter, Anvil and hammer, Measuring tape.
